Indulge in Romance: Discover the 8 Most Romantic Dining Spots in Portsmouth

With its charming waterfront and historic ambiance, Portsmouth sets the perfect stage for romantic dining. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking to infuse some romance into your evening, my coastal town offers an array of enchanting eateries. Here are my top picks for the  most romantic places to dine in Portsmouth.

The Library Restaurant
0.8 mile from The Tide House
Nestled in a historic building, what used to be the Rockingham Hotel, built in 1785, The Library Restaurant exudes old-world charm. The dimly lit dining rooms, adorned with rich wood and leather, create an intimate setting for a romantic dinner.  I recommend the bar area which also offers some table seating as well.  It’s a bit more casual and cozy.

The Puddle Dock
1 mile from The Tide House
Situated in a renovated property in historic Strawbery Banke, The Puddle Dock Restaurant, combines great food with a cozy atmosphere. Enjoy a candlelit dinner near the indoor fireplace or a more casual vibe at the expansive bar that weaves along the entire restaurant.   During summer months, the The Puddle Dock offers outdoor seating where you can listen to the entertainment from Prescott Park, just across the street. For a perfect night, grab an early bite at The Puddle Dock, and then watch a concert or play in Prescott Park.  Check out park’s events calendar here.

Martingale Wharf Restaurant & Bar
0.6 miles from The Tide House
Overlooking the Piscataqua River and the iconic Portsmouth tugboats, Martingale Wharf offers up the best deck in town for outdoor dining.  Cozy up around one of their outdoor fire tables and dine waterside with the best views of the harbor..  I wouldn’t say their cuisine is nearly as good as their views.  They serve up average New England classics that don’t quite compete with some of the fine dining in town. But the Martingale Wharf is definitely worth a visit, if only for a drink, or for a full lunch or dinner experience.

Cava Tapas & Wine Bar
0.6 miles from The Tide House
Cava might just be the smallest restaurant in Portsmouth, but if you can get a seat, it’s worth the visit. This bustling little tapas bar is nestled along the side street of ________ one of the cutest streets in town, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into a little tavern off the coast of Spain. While the price is a bit high for the portion size, The flavor of the small plates and delicious wine menu won’t disappoint. Summer and fall months offer up an adorable outdoor eating area as well, nestled right along the street.

Ristorante Massimo
0.7 miles from The Tide House
With its warm and welcoming ambiance, Ristorante Massimo is a haven for Italian cuisine lovers. In fact Massimo himself, will likely greet you at the door, as he’s been operating his restaurant and personally greeting his guests for three decades. Upon entrance, the first floor bar is more newly renovated and contemporary and offers a lighter menu, while the downstairs fine dining area is a nod to classic old school Italian decor - think cherub fountains, with authentic Italian cuisine that cannot be matched anywhere else on the seacoast.  The intimate seating and candlelit tables create an atmosphere that's perfect for a romantic dinner for two.

The Black Trumpet Bistro
0.5 miles from The Tide House
Tucked away in an old ship’s chandlery, The Black Trumpet Bistro exudes a unique and romantic charm that is my all time favorite. The downstairs dining space is surrounded by stone walls and simple tables that feel as if you’re in a cavernous tavern in France. The second floor offers a small bar and a few  tables overlooking the harbor available on a first come-first serve basis. The delicious farm-to-table menu of primarily French cuisine, combined with the cozy interior, makes for one of the most memorable dining experience on the seacoast.

Anneke Jans
2.2 miles from The Tide House
Known for its European-inspired dishes, Anneke Jans offers a cozy and intimate setting, just over the bridge in downtown Kittery, the beautiful wood floors, large U shape bar, and crisp white-linen dining tables give this restaurant the feel of a cozy tavern with an upscale vibe.  The menu, showcasing locally sourced ingredients, adds a touch of sophistication to a romantic evening.

Jumpin' Jay's Fish Cafe
0.4 miles from The Tide House
For the best upscale seafood in town, Jumpin' Jay's Fish Cafe tops the charts. With its warm cafe lights, large U shaped bar that looks into a bustling kitchen, and a menu showcasing the freshest catches, it's an excellent spot for a memorable dinner for two. Afterward, grab dessert and a port at La Maison Navarre, located just across the street, or head down the street about 100 yards for some icecream at Kilwins.

In Portsmouth, romance is not just in the air; it's on the plate. Whether you prefer a historic setting, a waterfront view, or global flavors, these dining spots are sure to kindle the flames of romance during your visit to this picturesque town. Indulge in the culinary delights and create lasting memories in one of the most romantic destinations on the New England coast.
