Picnic Worthy Spots in Portsmouth - From a Local’s Eye

Looking for the perfect place to unwind with some cheese, crackers, and a good bottle of wine? Let me take you through four of my favorite picnic spots in Portsmouth. Trust me, these are local gems that never disappoint.

Jackson Hill Landing
Just steps from The Tide House
This little spot is practically in the Tide House’s backyard. A short walk brings you to a small, sandy beach where locals store their rowboats and kayaks. There’s a grassy area with picnic tables and a bench, but if you prefer, bring a blanket or chair to soak in the peaceful harbor views. It’s also a great place to launch a paddleboard and explore the harbor.

Getting There: It’s an easy walk, but if you’re carrying a cooler or chairs, feel free to drive. Turn left out of the Tide House, then right onto Jackson Hill Street. After about 100 yards, you’ll spot the beach.

Prescott Park
A 0.9 miles scenic stroll from The Tide Hosue
With over a quarter-mile of waterfront, Prescott Park offers stunning views of the Piscataqua River, the Memorial Drawbridge, and the bustling port. There are docks extending into the water, a large fountain overlooking boats, and plenty of benches to choose from. During summer, you can catch live concerts or a play at the outdoor stage. Check out Prescott Park’s event schedule to find out what’s showing. If you venture past the stage, you’ll find a large lawn lined with beautiful raised flower beds.  Throw down a blanket beneath one of the trees and admire the work of some of the city’s most skilled botanists.  To the right of the main stage, you’ll find a secluded area with large bonsai trees, three large fountains, all surrounded by beautiful aromatic flowers.  This spot is worth a visit, no matter where you choose to picnic.

Getting There: Easy to walk to, but parking is available if needed. The park is about a mile from the Tide House, so it’s a nice scenic stroll through the heart of town along iconic Bow Street.  Parking can be tricky, you’ll often find parking along residential side streets, or in the parking lot if you turn right on Hancock Street.

Four Tree Island
A hidden gem, just 1.3 miles from The Tide House
Four Tree Island is one of those places that feels like a secret, even though it’s right in the heart of Portsmouth. Surrounded by water on all sides, this park offers panoramic views of the harbor, the Memorial Drawbridge, and all the boats passing by. There are picnic tables, benches, and plenty of spots to settle in for a peaceful afternoon.

Getting There: Head towards Prescott Park, turn left onto Mechanic St, and continue over the small bridge on Pierce Island Road. Parking is usually easy, but it can fill up on concert nights. There are also grassy parking lots on the left side of the street.   Walk through the Four Tree Island gate, follow the jetty, and you’re there!

Goat Island
A short scenic drive to amazing views
For stunning seaside views, Newcastle/Portsmouth Avenue is the place to be. My favorite go-to spot is a pull-off on the right side of the road as you head toward Newcastle Island. There’s a little sandy beach perfect for setting up a couple of chairs and enjoying the sight of starfish sailboats drifting between little islands that dot the horizon. After your picnic, take a drive through Newcastle Island, where you’ll find charming historic homes and beautiful coastal views. Don’t miss the Wentworth Hotel’s restaurants – Salt for a cozy meal and great mixed cocktails, or Latitudes for harborside dining. You’ll come upon the Wentworth Hotel on the same route 1B road, as you meander through Newcastle Island.

Getting There: Set your GPS to 372 Portsmouth Ave, Newcastle NH. Once you arrive, your destination will be on your right.

Enjoy your picnic adventures in Portsmouth – these spots are some of my favorites, and the best my town has to offer!
